Which UK Universities Accept the GI Bill? VA Approved Programmes Checked (2026)
VA approves UK degrees programme by programme. This checked list covers 14 institutions that publish a VA page, what each says and where it draws the line, with the steps to verify any school.
- No single VA list of UK universities exists on the pages checked; VA tells students to confirm the programme in the GI Bill Comparison Tool.
- Thirteen institutions in the table below currently take VA enrolments for some programmes, and Bournemouth closed to new applicants after September 2022.
- A university can hold approval for some programmes and none for others, so the exact course title and level decide the answer.
- If your course is missing, only the school can ask VA to approve it, by emailing federal.approvals@va.gov.
- Approval waits range from about 8 weeks to 6 months in the university pages checked on 9 October 2026.
This article checked 14 UK institutions that publish a VA funding page, and thirteen take new VA enrolments for at least some programmes. The table below gives the page, the scope and the limits for each, checked on 9 October 2026. It is a starting list and not a complete one. VA approves UK degrees one programme at a time, so a name on the table settles nothing until your exact course is confirmed.
UK institutions with a published VA page
Each row shows what the institution's own page says. Rules, lists and cap figures change, so read the linked page for the current position and note the date on it.
| Institution | What its page says | Limits to read | Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Manchester | Lists around 40 approved programmes across undergraduate, taught master's and PhD (list updated 30 April 2026). | Excludes online or blended elements, certificates and diplomas, placement or study abroad years, and joint degrees. Tuition paid in instalments. | VA page |
| University of Edinburgh | Says it is approved to process VA benefits for on-campus programmes studied in Edinburgh; publishes an approved programme list (PDF). | Excludes online, study away, placement and partner-delivered study. Approval about 60 days after an offer, not guaranteed. Page dated July 2024. | VA page |
| University of Glasgow | Publishes a VA approved courses list labelled August 2026. | Courses must be 100% on campus. It reports 2 to 3 months for approval in 2024. | VA page |
| University of St Andrews | States it is approved to process VA benefits at undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research level. | Programme must be approved; the school asks only after an offer. Reconfirm each year. No date on page. | VA page |
| University of Aberdeen | States it is approved to process VA benefits for study on campus in Aberdeen (Chapters 33 and 35). | Approval covers on-campus study only. Further steps sit on a linked page. | VA page |
| University of Oxford | Processes VA funding; checks approval course by course with the Comparison Tool. | Degree-bearing courses studied in Oxford; no certificates, diplomas or fully online study. Cites a $30,908.34 cap for 2026-27. | VA page |
| University of Cambridge | Lists courses approved with the VA, mostly MPhil, MSt and PhD plus some BA, LLM, MBA and master's courses. | No certificate or diploma courses. Requesting an unlisted course may take about 8 weeks. | VA page |
| King's College London | Approval is by programme: bachelor's, residential taught master's, MPhil and PhD can qualify. | No taught distance-learning master's. VA reviews new requests in 90 to 180 days. Page carries a 2025/26 label and warns it may be outdated. | VA page |
| London School of Economics | Processes Chapter 33 and says there is no guarantee a programme is approved. | Page lists 2021/22 outcomes (five approved, one denied) and advises deferring until approval is confirmed. No Yellow Ribbon. | VA page |
| University of Liverpool | States it is approved to administer VA education benefits; lists around 17 approved programme entries. | In-residence study only; no internships or practical training. No Yellow Ribbon. No date on page. | VA page |
| University of York | Says several courses are already approved and links a list of courses approved for VA funding. | Excludes distance learning, exchanges, study abroad and placement years. New approvals take about 6 months. No Yellow Ribbon. | VA page |
| Swansea University | Participates in VA education programmes; lists 12 approved courses (9 undergraduate, 3 postgraduate). | In-residence study only; certification not earlier than 120 days before term. No Yellow Ribbon. No date on page. | VA page |
| London Film School | Processes Chapter 33 and 35 funding and holds a VA facility number. | Course must be approved (about 6 months for new approvals); no placements or distance learning. No Yellow Ribbon. | VA page |
| Bournemouth University | States it was approved to process VA benefits but stopped administering new applications after the September 2022 intake. | Supports students already receiving VA funding to the end of their course. Treat as closed to new applicants. | VA page |
Other UK universities almost certainly hold approvals too. VA's foreign schools guidance does not publish a school list, so absence from this table says nothing about a school you favour. Ask it directly.

Why approval works programme by programme
VA's foreign schools page states that VA has to approve your programme and that the programme must lead to a standard associate degree or higher (or its foreign equivalent). VA compares UK degrees with those awarded by accredited US colleges. Private overseas schools must award degrees equal to public colleges in the same country, with the same entrance requirements.
Manchester is blunt about the result: each programme must be individually approved, and similar names do not guarantee approval. Cambridge, Glasgow and King's College London make the same point. A university can be a long-standing VA participant while the master's you want has never been submitted.
How to check any UK school
- Get your Certificate of Eligibility. Apply at VA.gov. For a foreign school, VA asks you to request an updated certificate through Ask VA with the school's name and location and your degree.
- Search the GI Bill Comparison Tool. King's College London describes the route as selecting England, the institution and then Programs. The tool loads in the browser and its results could not be captured for this article, so screenshot your own result with the date.
- Cross-check the university's own list. Match the course title, award (BA, MSc, MPhil, PhD) and campus word for word.
- Email the school's US loans or funding office. Ask for written confirmation that your programme is approved for your entry year, and ask about Yellow Ribbon, tuition instalments and certification dates.
- If VA lists nothing, ask VA directly. Email federal.approvals@va.gov with the school name, full address and programme, or use Ask VA. VA also states that you cannot apply on the school's behalf.
- Request approval through the school. Schools accept this only after an offer. Do not start until approval arrives, because VA warns that an unapproved programme leaves you paying all costs.
Exclusions that appear on almost every page
- Distance, online or blended learning. VA does not approve independent study at foreign schools.
- Certificates and diplomas below degree level.
- Study abroad years, exchanges, placements and practical training (Manchester, Edinburgh, York, Liverpool, LFS and others).
- Joint, double or dual degrees delivered with a partner institution.
- Yellow Ribbon matching. Manchester, Edinburgh, LSE, Liverpool, Swansea, York and LFS say they cannot process it.
Published approval waits on the pages checked: Cambridge about 8 weeks, Edinburgh about 60 days, Glasgow 2 to 3 months in 2024, King's College London 90 to 180 days, Manchester and York up to 6 months. Apply early and keep a fallback course.
Questions to put to the school
- Is my programme on your approved list for my entry year, and when was the list updated?
- Does the course contain any placement, fieldwork abroad or practical training element?
- How does the school convert pounds to dollars, and how many tuition instalments does VA pay?
- What is the tuition shortfall against the $30,908.34 cap for 2026-27, as VA's rates page sets it?
- What date can you certify my enrolment, and who contacts VA if payment is late?
Next, read the GI Bill step-by-step guide for the full sequence, and the Student visa guide for the immigration side. For wider help, see Study in the UK.
What to do this week
- Open the university links below for your shortlist and download each current approved programme list.
- Search each exact course title and level in the GI Bill Comparison Tool and screenshot the result.
- Email the university's US loans or funding office from its VA page and ask for written confirmation of your programme.
- If the course is missing, ask the school to request approval and get its estimated timeline in writing.
- Delay your decision to accept an offer until you hold a written answer on approval and the tuition cap.
