Veteran coaching

Coaching built on research, from people who know the crossing.

One-to-one coaching for veterans leaving service, and a route for coaches to train, certify and join the Total Veteran Network. Built on doctoral research into how people rebuild identity after leaving the military.

Be coached by someone who understands the crossing

Leaving the military removes structure, status and a clear mission all at once. A Total Veteran coach works with you to rebuild them in civilian life, at your pace and on your terms. Coaching suits you if you are preparing to leave, newly out, or years into civilian life and still searching for direction.

Recognise

See where you are

Name what service gave you and what leaving changed, using the WEAPONS self-assessment across six areas of life.

Reclaim

Restore what went quiet

Rebuild routine, health and time with the people at home, with a daily and weekly structure that supports them.

Reframe

Name your next mission

Turn military experience into a civilian identity and a written Personal Mission Architecture that you own.

The one-to-one process

What coaching with a Total Veteran coach looks like

An opening conversation

You talk with a coach about where you are, what you want and what has not worked. There is no pressure to commit.

The WEAPONS self-assessment

A seven-area picture of your wellbeing and life after service. It shows where to focus first and gives you and your coach a shared starting point.

Build your Personal Mission Architecture

With your coach you write a plan for who you are becoming, what matters most and the structure that supports it.

Regular coaching sessions

Sessions follow the plan you set. Your coach holds you to your own standards, adjusts as life changes and keeps you moving. Length and rhythm are agreed with you.

Peer support and community

Where it helps, you are paired with a Bravo, a peer who has made the same crossing, and you can join the wider network of UK and US veterans.

Review and move on

You and your coach review progress against your own goals. Many veterans then give back by mentoring others.

Coaching is not therapy. If you need clinical support your coach will help you find it. In crisis in the UK, call Samaritans on 116 123 or text SHOUT to 85258.

The Total Veteran Network

A coach, a peer and a community around you

Coaching sits inside a network. Veterans find a coach, a peer and a community of UK and US ex-forces in one place. Coaches find the framework, the research and the veterans. The network exists so that no one makes the crossing alone.

Veterans

Find your people

Meet other UK and US veterans, share what works and rebuild a social circle that understands service.

Coaches

Work inside a framework

Use a tested method, join a community of coaches and work with veterans who are ready to rebuild.

Professionals

Add depth to the network

Specialists from other sectors help veterans with career, money, health, family and study.

Coach veterans inside the network

We are launching the Total Veteran coaching programme and looking for coaches who want to work with veterans moving from military service into the lives they design for themselves. As a Total Veteran coach you guide veterans through the Personal Mission Architecture, and you have access to the wider network.

The framework

A structured method

The Crossing, the PMA and the WEAPONS assessment give you a clear, research-based way to work with veterans.

The network

Community and introductions

Join a growing community of coaches and veterans in the UK and US, and meet veterans looking for the right coach.

The evidence

Doctoral-level research

Total Veteran grows from research into identity reconstruction after leaving a total institution, and the research continues.

Ideally you have been through Total Veteran yourself first, so you know the process from the inside. We will take you through it if you have not.

Certification

Become a Total Veteran certified coach

Total Veteran certification shows that you are trained in our framework and ready to coach veterans. It runs alongside independent accreditation from bodies such as ICF, EMCC and the Association for Coaching, which we encourage. This is the pathway we are building for the founding group.

Register your interest

Tell us about your coaching background, your sector and what draws you to veteran work.

Learn the framework

Complete an introduction to the Crossing, the Personal Mission Architecture and the WEAPONS assessment, ideally by building your own PMA first.

Practise with supervision

Coach veterans with support and feedback so your practice meets the standard we expect.

Complete the assessment

Confirm your certification and join the network as a Total Veteran coach.

Already a working coach and prefer affiliation to full certification? You can join as an affiliated coach. Details of each route are being finalised and we will share them with everyone who registers.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I become a Total Veteran certified coach?

We are launching the Total Veteran coaching programme now, and a founding group of coaches is forming. The pathway we are building has four steps: register your interest, complete an introduction to the Total Veteran framework (the Crossing, the Personal Mission Architecture and the WEAPONS assessment), practise under supervision with veterans, and complete an assessment to confirm certification. Register interest below and we will send the current details as they are confirmed.

I am already a coach. Can I be certified or affiliated with Total Veteran?

Yes. Experienced coaches are welcome, whether you hold ICF, EMCC or Association for Coaching accreditation or work from another professional background. You can work toward Total Veteran certification, or join as an affiliated coach who offers Total Veteran-aligned coaching and is part of the network. Tell us which route interests you in the form below.

Do I need to have been through Total Veteran myself first?

It is the ideal. A coach who has built their own Personal Mission Architecture knows the process from the inside. It is not a strict requirement for every route. If you have not been through it, we will take you through it as part of the pathway.

What does one-to-one coaching with a Total Veteran coach look like?

You start with a conversation and the WEAPONS self-assessment, which shows where you stand across six areas of life. With your coach you then build your Personal Mission Architecture, a written plan for who you are becoming and how you will live and work after service. Sessions follow a plan agreed with you, with check-ins against your own goals. Where it helps, you are paired with a peer, the Bravo, and you can join the wider network of UK and US veterans. Length and rhythm are agreed between you and your coach.

What is a Personal Mission Architecture?

A Personal Mission Architecture, or PMA, is a plan you write for the next chapter of your life. It sets out your mission, your priorities and the daily and weekly structure that supports them. Many veterans lose structure and purpose when they leave, and the PMA rebuilds both on your terms.

How much does coaching cost?

Costs are by enquiry at the moment. Please get in touch and we will tell you what is available. As the network grows, fees will differ between coaches, and we will publish them clearly when they are set.

Is Total Veteran coaching therapy?

No. Coaching supports goals, identity, structure and direction. It does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions. If you need clinical support, your coach will help you find it. If you are in crisis in the UK, contact Samaritans on 116 123 or text SHOUT to 85258.

Who can be coached?

Anyone who has served, including UK and US veterans, ex-forces and service leavers preparing to leave. Coaching can start before you leave or years afterwards.

Is coaching online or in person?

Both are planned. Online coaching lets us match UK and US veterans with the right coach wherever they live. In-person sessions depend on where the coach is based.

What do coaches get from the Total Veteran Network?

Affiliated and certified coaches become part of a community of coaches and veterans. That includes the Total Veteran framework and tools, research and evidence from our doctoral-level work, introductions to veterans seeking coaching, and the chance to work alongside professionals from other sectors. The details of each route will be confirmed as we launch.

Are you looking for coaches in particular sectors?

Yes. We want coaches with different backgrounds, personal and professional. That includes career and business, wellbeing and fitness, family and relationships, money and housing, trades and craft, education and study, and creative work. If your experience would help veterans rebuild a part of their life, we would like to hear from you.

Is Total Veteran certification the same as ICF, EMCC or AC accreditation?

No. Total Veteran certification is our own and shows that a coach is trained in our framework. Independent accreditation from ICF, EMCC or the Association for Coaching is separate, and we encourage coaches to hold it.
